Under 6 Months Postpartum — and No Shedding: Here’s What I Did Differently

If you’re pregnant or newly postpartum, Congratulations! While your body is doing an incredible thing, your hair is fully participating! Truth is, your hair is changing, but it doen't have to suffer.

Hair during pregnancy and postpartum isn’t just reacting randomly. It’s responding to hormones, habits, nutrition, stress, and care.Yes, pregnancy hormones may bless you with fuller-looking hair. But postpartum can introduce things no one really warns you about: shedding, thinning edges, dryness, breakage, stalled growth.

And for 4C hair, these changes often show up faster and more intensely and the truth i've lived and learning is that, hormones set the stage, but your hair habits determine the outcome.

As at the time this post was created, I was currently under 6 months postpartum, and so far, there has been little to no shedding. Not because I found a miracle product or because my hormones are “special.”But because I prepared my hair before postpartum arrived.

Let me explain.

During Pregnancy, estrogen levels rise and hair shedding slows down. Your hair may feel lushy, thicker and fuller. This is why we have the beautiful illusion that our hair is “growing faster.”In reality, you’re just losing less hair.

After Birth(postpartum), estrogen levels drop dramatically. All the hairs that were resting begin to shed all at once impacting our edges and our texture feels different. Our Lush hair may beging to feel dry or weak and this is totally normal.

What isn’t normal? Excessive breakage, Bald or inflamed edges, Chronic dryness and this is where habits either protect or work against you. These are the daily & weekly habits that saved my hair

1. Moisture Is Everything (Especially for 4C Hair)

Pregnancy + postpartum already pull moisture from your body. 4C hair feels it first.

What I did:

  • Moisturized with water-based products

  • Sealed with oil

  • Deep conditioned with twice a month

What I avoided:

  • Alcohol-heavy products

  • Over-washing

  • Dry “protective” styles

Dry hair breaks. Moisturized hair survives seasons.

2. Protective Styles Without Pain

Not all protective styles are protective, I chose:

  • Loose braids

  • Flat twists

  • Low-manipulation buns

  • Wigs with caps (no glue)

I avoided:

  • Tight braids

  • Glued closures

  • Cornrows pulling my edges

  • Heavy extensions

Pain equals follicle stress. Follicle stress accelerates postpartum hair loss.

3. Scalp Care Is Growth Insurance

Hair grows from the scalp, not the ends.

My routine:

  • Scalp massage 3 - 4 times a week

  • Light oiling (never dumping oil daily)

  • Clean, breathable scalp

A neglected scalp delays regrowth postpartum.

4. I Did Not Skip Wash Day

Healthy scalp = strong recovery.

  • Washed every 2 weeks

  • Deep conditioned monthly

Dirty scalp clogs follicles.Clogged follicles slow regrowth.

What You Can and Can’t Control Postpartum

You cannot stop hormonal shedding completely but you can:

  • Stop breakage

  • Protect your edges

  • Reduce tangles

  • Speed up regrowth

  • Restore thickness faster

That’s the difference between “normal shedding” and unnecessary loss.

Below are more tips that helped me and will help you too;

My Postpartum Hair Recovery Plan (First 6 Months)

  1. Low-tension styles only

  2. Moisturize every 3 - 5 days

  3. Scalp massage for 5 minutes

  4. Finger-detangle first

  5. No chemicals

  6. Silk bonnet always

  7. Protein-rich meals

  8. Stay hydrated

  9. Reduce stress

  10. Be patient

Recovery takes time, but it does happen.

Feed Your Hair from the Inside

Hair is made of protein so I focused on:

  • Eggs

  • Meat or plant protein

  • Spinach

  • Avocados

  • Fish

  • Nuts and seeds

Low iron slows regrowth. Low protein increases shedding. Hair care starts in the kitchen.

A Simple Routine for Busy Moms

No long rituals. No overwhelming routines, just consistency.

Once a week (30 - 40 minutes):

  1. Moisturize

  2. Detangle gently

  3. Oil the ends

  4. Massage scalp

  5. Protective style

Consistency beats complexity.

A Word About Edges

Edges fall first postpartum, so I stayed gentle:

  • Light massage

  • Minimal oil

  • No glue

  • No tension

  • Never brushing dry

Edges respond to kindness.

You’re Not Losing Your Hair, You’re Healing

Postpartum doesn’t end your beauty.Pregnancy doesn’t ruin your crown.

Your body is rebuilding. And with the right care, your hair will too.

I’m under 6 months postpartum, and my hair is still standing strong. Not because of magic. but because of preparation, patience, and consistency.

And if you’re in this season too your crown can recover right along with you. Happy Healing Queen!
